Behind The Scenes: Stained Glass

Creating stained glass artwork involves countless hours of pattern creation, pattern prep, color selection, precise measurements, and more, before the first piece is ever even cut.

Next comes carefully cutting each piece.

After every piece is cut, I spend time grinding them to get the perfect fit.

It’s not uncommon for me to add kiln-fired elements, such as hand-painted eyes, glass jewels, or more.

After grinding comes my favorite part, foiling. This is when I can really see the pattern come together, and make any final adjustments.

If needed, I reinforce the piece with products such as copper Restrip.

After I’m satisfied with every piece, I solder both sides of the piece, patina to blacken the solder, and wax for protection.

Sometimes I use a layering technique called plating to achieve affects otherwise impossible to create.

Finally, large panels get a custom frame that we cut to size and assemble. If the piece is a commission or available for purchase, this is when it would be complete. If it is not for sale, it gets installed in my home.
